Magic as
Political Literacy

On reading the world in the magical key — and on what to do when the world reads back.

From the Cosmogram Oracle

Magic, in the only sense that has ever interested this publication, is the practice of noticing how reality is being assembled — and then having the nerve to participate in its making rather than simply being made by it. It is not stagecraft. It is not the retreat of the credulous into comfortable unreality. It is rigorous attention applied to the layer where symbols, stories, and collective belief construct the material conditions we then experience as given.

This issue opens with the founding essay, Reality Is Not Given, which sets the cosmology: two layers of the world (Malkuth and Yesod), two kinds of operator (Light and Heavy), and the proposition that whoever controls the symbolic register controls everything downstream. A companion essay, What the Draconian Is For, turns the same lens on the conspiracy reflex itself — the reflex most likely to short-circuit the work before it begins. A cycle of field reports on Light Operators currently active in transmission. And a piece of fiction, The Seam, which does in narrative what the rest of the issue can only describe.

The brief, throughout: read the world as a magical document — composed, contestable, edit-able — without flattering yourself that you have escaped its composition. The two moves are the same move.

Founding Essay

Reality Is Not Given

On magic as political literacy, the hidden machinery of the world, and why the people currently running things are more vulnerable than they appear

The cornerstone. The two-layer cosmology of Malkuth and Yesod. The operative distinction between Light and Heavy Operators. The argument that consciousness — the shared sense of what is real, what is possible, what is inevitable, and what is unthinkable — is the territory being contested. Field reports on seven Light Operators currently in active transmission, and an introduction to the Eternal Operators who have always known where the real work gets done.

What the Draconian Is For

A reading lesson in the magical key

Begins inside the conspiracy at full pitch — Draconians, Semiyarka, the seven-to-one ratio — then turns the lens on the architecture of what you just felt. Five pillars the lore shares with every fundamentalism. Tesla and the institutional question that is more chilling than the cover-up version. The pineal recovered as actual contemplative practice. And, in the recursive turn at the close, the essay confessing that the slot it has built for the literate reader has the same shape as the slot the conspiracy builds.

Why the Lizard Always Has a Tongue

An anatomy of appetite

A companion to What the Draconian Is For. The reptile in us was never civilised — only redirected. On appetite, the tongue, and the older grammar of taking-in that the suits in the boardroom never quite learned to speak.

Symbolic precision, popular form

The Drake battle as the best recent case study in pure Yesod warfare. He defeated someone with vastly more material resources through symbolic precision alone — and then the Super Bowl, and then the Pulitzer.

The Seam

A short story

What the essays can only describe, the story enacts. The seam is the place where the composed surface of reality shows its stitching — and the question of what a character does once they have seen it. Currently in development.
